Fiji’s Future Mathematicians Shine: School Claims Historic Victory

Shiri Guru Nanak Khalsa Primary School has achieved a remarkable milestone by securing first place in the Fiji Mathematics Competition (FMC) for Year Eight this year. The school’s team, made up of Danish Prasad, Aarav Chand, Taniska Lal, and Ishita Lata, successfully solved 20 math questions in just 31 minutes during the event held at the Latter-Day Saints Church in Tamavua, Suva, last Saturday.

Taniska Lal, the team leader and head girl, expressed their confidence in winning, highlighting their success as Year Eight champions at the Northern Zone competition. “We spent a maximum of four weeks preparing with the support of our teachers, Kamlesh Karan and Ashweeni Dutt,” she noted.

The competition saw participation from 14 schools across Fiji, making their win a significant achievement for the team. School head teacher Rajesh Kumar acknowledged the efforts of the school manager, parents, teachers, and the families of other students for collaborating to raise funds that enabled the students to travel to Suva for the competition.

“This is the first time Year Eight students have reached such a high level, and bringing the top trophy home is a great blessing,” Mr. Kumar said. He emphasized the school’s commitment to holistic development, stating that competitions like this inspire other students to recognize their strengths and strive for excellence in their education.
