Fiji’s Future Engineers: Striving for Global Standards

Professor John Mo highlighted the necessity for the engineering program at Fiji National University (FNU) to produce graduates that meet global standards as mandated by the Washington Accord, during a meeting held at the FNU campus on Tuesday. The event was hosted by Engineering Fiji (EF) and brought together various sector representatives and EF council members.

Professor Mo, affiliated with the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, emphasized that the program aims to equip future engineers who will eventually join EF. He noted that the meeting’s primary objective was to promote a shared understanding of professional standards required for engineering practice in Fiji, in accordance with the Washington Accord, an international agreement concerning the accreditation of engineering programs.

In his remarks, Salabogi Mavoa, Dean of the College of Engineering and Technical Vocational Education and Training at FNU, expressed the university’s commitment to facilitating such meetings due to the productive collaboration between FNU and EF.

The meeting was chaired by Terence Erasito, Director of Erasito Consultants, alongside Vijay Krishnan, Director of Engineered Designs Ltd., who also serves as the elected vice president of Engineering Fiji. The gathering also welcomed newly elected members, including re-elected president Hamen Lodhia of Hamen Lodhia Engineers, Honorary Secretary and Treasurer Dr. Satyanand Singh, Associate Professor at FNU, along with James Raman, Anil Kapadia, Richard Sekiguchi, and Satish Patel.
