The Fiji Bureau of Statistics (FBoS), in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund, has formed a new steering committee that includes various governmental and non-governmental organizations to develop a National Population Policy. This initiative was underscored by a two-day consultation held in Suva, where stakeholders addressed critical issues affecting the nation. Key topics included infrastructure in maritime areas, market access, rural development, youth empowerment, education, employment opportunities, healthcare accessibility, and environmental concerns.

FBoS CEO Kemueli Naiqama emphasized the significance of this consultation, stating that it is essential for enhancing the quality of life and well-being of the communities in Fiji. He indicated that the outcome of these discussions would contribute to a comprehensive policy framework that will be presented to Parliament.

Furthermore, Shiri Gounder, the Permanent Secretary of Finance, highlighted the government’s commitment to an inclusive policy-making approach. He noted that through this collaborative effort, a wide range of perspectives would inform the policy, making it more reflective of the people’s needs as per the new National Development Plan. Gounder also expressed that understanding population dynamics plays a crucial role in various sectors including economic growth, education, and environmental sustainability.

In closing, he urged the stakeholders to maintain the momentum into the next phase of drafting and finalizing the policy.

This initiative shows promise for addressing the multifaceted challenges Fiji faces, ultimately aiming to foster a brighter, more sustainable future for its citizens. The inclusion of diverse perspectives in the policy-making process can lead to more effective solutions that resonate with the community’s aspirations.
