Fiji’s Future: Can Unity Overcome Diversity?

Former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry emphasized the importance of embracing equal citizenship for every individual who considers Fiji their home, highlighting it as a cornerstone for the nation’s development, peace, and prosperity. In his message for Diwali, Chaudhry reflected on the festival of lights, which symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and urges us to shift from ignorance to knowledge in search of truth and happiness.

Despite the uplifting message of Diwali, Chaudhry lamented that many of its teachings remain unfulfilled, overshadowed by the complex realities of life in Fiji. He pointed out that while slogans promoting “unity in diversity” have been prevalent, actual efforts towards unity have faced challenges, often yielding to the forces of diversity.

Chaudhry asserted that no single community in Fiji can thrive in isolation, a truth underscored by the history of four coups in the nation. He underlined the interdependence of Fiji’s ethnic groups—including iTaukei, Indian, Rotuman, Part-European, Chinese, and other Pacific Islanders—stressing that socio-economic progress is reliant on collective cooperation.

He argued that true unity and peace cannot be achieved in the presence of inequality and called for an end to race-based discrimination. Chaudhry underscored the need for reform, pointing to constitutional guarantees against racial discrimination that remain unheeded in state policies.

With discussions around a proposed Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Chaudhry believes now is an opportune moment to address these issues. He expressed hope that a united Fiji would greatly benefit the youth, offering them opportunities that may have been unavailable during periods of political and economic turmoil.

Chaudhry urged the youth to actively participate in the peace and reconciliation initiative, emphasizing that the older generation should support and guide them. He envisioned a future where young people play a pivotal role in maintaining peace, ensuring that it persists despite future challenges.

To forge a peaceful community, Chaudhry called for unity above differences and collaborative efforts toward the collective good. He inspired a vision of cooperation between youth and elders, advocating for a Fiji that stands united in peace and harmony.

This appeal resonates with the ongoing global pursuit of social equity and collective growth, echoing the notion that a harmonious society is built through inclusiveness and mutual respect. By empowering all citizens, especially the youth, Fiji can foster a brighter, more stable future.
