Fiji’s Future: Can Unity and Progress Be Achieved Through Constitutional Reform?

The leader of the Fiji Labour Party (FLP), Mahendra Chaudhry, has emphasized the need for the Bose Levu Vakaturaga (Great Council of Chiefs) to endorse a national agenda aimed at Fiji’s orderly progress, as well as to seriously consider ways to enhance race relations in the country. His remarks were made in reaction to chairperson Ratu Viliame Seruvakula’s statements calling for constitutional reforms.

Chaudhry raised concerns about the need for the chiefs to recognize that the iTaukei community is not a vulnerable group requiring extra constitutionally mandated protections. He pointed out that the rights of the iTaukei, which encompass culture, land, and economic resources, have consistently been safeguarded by Fiji’s various constitutions since independence.

Notably, Chaudhry emphasized the strength and prominence of the iTaukei community in Fijian society, stating they are not comparable to indigenous groups such as the Aboriginals of Australia or the Maori of New Zealand since they are well-represented in civil services and the government.

His comments resonate with previous discussions held by the Great Council of Chiefs, which has recently pushed for a thorough re-evaluation of Fiji’s 2013 Constitution. Chairperson Ratu Viliame has expressed that the council is dissatisfied with the existing constitutional provisions and is advocating for changes to better reflect the realities faced by the iTaukei community, particularly concerning their rights and socio-economic issues.

In light of these ongoing dialogues, there is a collective hope for reforms that could address not only the challenges faced by the iTaukei but also foster unity among all ethnic groups in Fiji, ultimately leading to enhanced socio-economic conditions for every community.

Chaudhry’s call for better race relations signifies a crucial step toward achieving inclusivity and understanding within Fiji’s diverse society, fostering optimism for a future characterized by equity and harmonious coexistence.
