Fiji’s Future: Can the Military Find Its Place?

Unity Fiji party leader Savenaca Narube has emphasized the need for Fiji to clearly define the military’s appropriate role in order to achieve long-term political stability. This statement comes in response to comments made by RFMF commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, who expressed the importance of the military’s involvement in governance.

Mr. Narube praised the commander for his openness, calling it a sign of courage and transparency, which has historically been lacking within the military. He noted that issues brought to light by the commander were previously unaddressed by earlier military leadership. Narube pointed out that since the coups of 1987, the military has consistently influenced Fiji’s governance, ethnic relations, and economic conditions. He believes that for Fiji to regain political stability and economic health, the military’s rightful role must be clarified.

Additionally, former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry expressed concerns regarding the military’s loss of trust among Fijians due to its involvement in the coups of 1987 and 2006, which overturned democratically elected governments. He criticized the military for its delayed response during the 2000 coup against his government, suggesting it indicated support for racist factions involved in the coup. Chaudhry highlighted the need for reconciliation with the Indo-Fijian community, who were significantly impacted by past coups.

Chaudhry recognized that addressing complicated historical issues is essential for determining the future role of the military in Fiji. He shared an optimistic outlook, stating that lessons can be learned from other countries that have faced similar challenges, paving the way for a military role that benefits the citizens and the government.
