Fiji’s Future: A Strategic Partnership with China?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his support for the One China Policy, describing it as a fundamental aspect of Fiji’s diplomatic relations. During his meeting with Li Qiang, the Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, in Beijing, Rabuka noted that China remained a steadfast ally to Fiji during times of political turmoil in 1987, 2000, and 2006 when other partners distanced themselves.

The discussions between the two leaders focused on key priorities including poverty reduction, infrastructure development, enhancing land and maritime connectivity, the Belt and Road Initiative, and revitalizing rural areas. Rabuka emphasized Fiji’s ambition to partner with China for a comprehensive infrastructure development program aimed at transforming the nation’s infrastructure in the coming years.

In his remarks about the Belt and Road Initiative, Rabuka praised the support from the China International Development Cooperation Agency for improvements to the 82-kilometer road network in Vanua Levu.

On regional issues, Rabuka reaffirmed Fiji’s dedication to regionalism and the implementation of the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, which aims to address shared challenges such as climate change, ocean preservation, and conflict resolution.

In response, Premier Li reiterated China’s commitment to supporting Fiji in areas of mutual interest, particularly in poverty alleviation and infrastructure development. He also highlighted China’s intention to enhance cooperation with Fiji through the high-quality advancement of the Belt and Road Initiative and the Global Development Initiative.
