Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, recently met with Pio Smith, the Regional Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), during the High-Level Regional Consultation on Financing for Development in Asia and the Pacific held in Bangkok.

DPM Prasad expressed his gratitude to UNFPA for its crucial assistance in formulating Fiji’s inaugural National Population Policy. This policy aims to effectively address the challenges posed by demographic changes and ensure that population trends are aligned with national development strategies. The implementation of this policy is anticipated to significantly influence the trajectory of Fiji’s future growth and development.

Looking ahead, UNFPA is eager to see Fiji actively participating in the upcoming 58th session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD), scheduled for April 2025.

The collaboration between Fiji and UNFPA highlights the nation’s commitment to proactive population management and development. By addressing demographic shifts through targeted policies, Fiji is positioning itself for sustainable growth in the coming years.

In summary, this meeting not only underscores the importance of international partnerships in nation-building but also reflects a positive step towards ensuring that Fiji’s development goals are met in alignment with its demographic realities.
