Vijendra Prakash, a former MP from the FijiFirst party, has been ordered by Suva Judge Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu to pay a sum of $2,000 to the Attorney-General’s office. The ruling came after Justice Bulamainaivalu dismissed Prakash’s application for constitutional redress, in which he argued that his rights to a fair trial and protection under the Fijian Constitution were violated.
Prakash had previously received a sentence of 36 months of partial imprisonment in February 2023 for making false declarations and unlawfully obtaining financial benefits through parliamentary allowances in 2018. Justice Bulamainaivalu explained that the application was struck out because Prakash had alternative legal options available for addressing his concerns.
Representatives from the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption and the plaintiff’s lawyer were present during the hearing, while the Attorney-General’s office did not attend.
This situation highlights the importance of integrity in public service, as well as the legal frameworks in place to address misconduct among officials.
