Fiji’s Fisheries Sector Set for a Major Boost!

The Fisheries Ministry has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Overseas Fishery Cooperation Foundation of Japan to implement the Fisheries Development Assistance for Pacific Island Nations Seven Project. This initiative aims to restore and maintain fisheries-related facilities in Fiji while transferring vital technical skills from Japan.

Shirasu Toshiro, the President of the Overseas Fisheries Cooperation Foundation, emphasized that the project is focused on achieving stable operations of fisheries facilities and enhancing the technical abilities of local technicians. He noted the challenges associated with maintaining continuous and stable operations, which require skilled engineering.

Additionally, the foundation plans to conduct workshops to enhance the technical skills of facility staff and support the consistent functioning of ice-making facilities in Fiji. Fisheries and Forestry Minister Alitia Bainivalu expressed her heartfelt appreciation for the ongoing support from OFCF Japan and expressed hopes for a long-lasting collaboration in the future.
