The PacMan project has been focused on identifying marine invasive species since its inception in 2020. Supported by UNESCO and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, and implemented by the University of the South Pacific (USP) through its Institute of Applied Sciences, the initiative aims to monitor and identify high-risk marine invasive species in Suva Harbor. Additionally, it has led to the creation of Fiji’s first marine invasive species monitoring plan, known as the “Decision Support Tool.”

The USP emphasizes the project’s vital role in raising awareness about marine invasive species and the need for monitoring their locations. According to Local PacMan Project Manager Joape Ginigini, this tool is groundbreaking for the Pacific as it has been developed by a local team specifically for local use. It incorporates extensive local scientific knowledge, providing comprehensive support in this area.

UNESCO has contributed to the development of the tool, making the detection of marine invasive species more accessible. They have established a database that compiles observations and integrates them into a user-friendly software system, which allows marine scientists to share biodiversity data with the community.

The Decision Support Tool is readily available on various online platforms in Fiji, ensuring that stakeholders can effectively monitor and respond to the challenges posed by invasive marine species.

This project not only enhances local capacity for biodiversity monitoring but also fosters regional cooperation in tackling environmental issues. As more communities engage with these tools, Fiji can lead in protecting its unique marine ecosystems against invasive threats.

Overall, this initiative reflects a proactive approach to environmental conservation, leveraging local expertise and technology to safeguard the sustainability of marine ecosystems in the Pacific region.
