A mother of three from Lautoka, Kusum Lata, made history by becoming the first Fijian to successfully undergo heart surgery at the Pacific Specialist Healthcare, Fiji’s only locally owned private hospital. The 56-year-old, who lives in Natabua, expressed immense gratitude to the medical team led by Parvish Kumar, the hospital’s founder and CEO, as well as the doctors and nursing staff involved in her care.
Mrs. Lata’s heart operation was significantly more affordable compared to the $23,000 USD she would have had to pay for similar procedures overseas, including travel expenses to India. After suffering a heart attack in June, she felt hopeless when faced with high costs for her needed surgery. However, upon learning about the new heart surgery services at Pacific Specialist Healthcare, she seized the opportunity and became the first patient to undergo the procedure there.
During her recovery, Mrs. Lata was overjoyed at being able to stay close to her family, a contrast to what would have been her experience in India. She emphasized a vital message to fellow Fijians: saving money and opting for local healthcare can alleviate concerns over financial burdens associated with heart surgeries.
Today, she feels significantly better and encourages others to explore the affordable options provided by Pacific Specialist Healthcare. Mrs. Lata’s successful operation not only highlights the progress in local healthcare facilities but also serves as an inspiration for those facing similar health challenges in Fiji.
This development is a positive sign for the future of healthcare in Fiji, showcasing that residents can receive quality medical treatment locally at reduced costs. The triumph of Mrs. Lata may encourage more individuals to seek necessary surgeries within their own country, promoting both health and economic stability.
