Fiji is on a path to harness its audio-visual industry as a catalyst for economic growth, impacting various sectors such as hospitality, transportation, and local services. This optimistic perspective was shared by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Cooperatives, MSMEs and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, during the Film Fiji Industry Connect event held in Suva.

Kamikamica emphasized the significant contributions of Film Fiji to the nation’s economy, noting that during the last financial year, Fiji hosted film and television productions from 11 different countries. This influx generated nearly 260 million dollars in economic activity, while also creating jobs for approximately 1,300 Fijians and involving 282 local service providers. This highlights the substantial economic impact of the audio-visual sector.

The Deputy Prime Minister mentioned aspirations similar to the successful “Love Island” reality show, indicating Fiji’s intent to attract more international productions while simultaneously empowering local filmmakers. He stressed the government’s recognition of the audio-visual industry’s transformative potential, committing to establish an environment conducive to its future growth. Efforts like collaborations with the Immigration Department to streamline work permit processes exemplify this commitment.

Kamikamica assured that the Fijian government is dedicated to fostering growth and development within the audio-visual sector, aiming to provide local filmmakers with the necessary support to explore their artistic abilities to the fullest.

With continued support and resources, the potential for local talent to flourish and the economy to diversify appears bright.

This article not only highlights the economic impact of the audio-visual industry but also showcases the government’s proactive stance in nurturing local creators, demonstrating a positive ripple effect across various sectors.
