Fiji’s Film Industry Soars: A New Era of Creative Expression

The Audio-Visual and Film industry has been highlighted as a key focus in Fiji’s updated National Development Plan. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Hon. Professor Biman Prasad, addressed this initiative at the premiere of the locally produced film “Langha Phobia,” which explores themes of trust and respect in marriage, held at Life Cinema in Nakasi.

Professor Prasad noted the significant potential for growth in Fiji’s film and audio-visual sector, emphasizing its importance as a burgeoning industry. He pointed out that Fiji is emerging as a favored destination for film production, credited to its stunning landscapes, rich marine life, and vibrant culture.

The Coalition Government has placed a strong emphasis on developing local talent through education and training in the creative arts. “The Government has been providing substantial support to our local universities to nurture talents and enhance skills through diverse programs and courses,” he said.

Prof Prasad described the new National Development Plan as “The People’s Plan,” designed to reflect the aspirations of the citizens and their desire for improved socio-economic conditions. He stressed the necessity of creating an enabling environment for local filmmakers to hone their skills, which is essential for the industry’s advancement.

“Films convey a universal language, connecting people across different cultures, nationalities, ages, and socioeconomic backgrounds,” he remarked. He further acknowledged that movies serve as an important art form that transcends societal barriers, promoting shared values and emotions while being a powerful storytelling medium.

In his remarks, Professor Prasad commended the director, producer, and the entire cast and crew for their hard work and dedication in bringing this vision to fruition. He noted that each film by Mr. Vimal Reddy uniquely encapsulates the essence of Fijian culture while delivering strong social messages that resonate with local audiences.
