Fiji’s Film Industry Set for a Makeover: What’s Next?

The growth of the Audio-Visual and Film industry has been emphasized in Fiji’s newly introduced National Development Plan. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Hon. Professor Biman Prasad made this statement during the premiere of the locally produced film “Langha Phobia,” which explores the themes of trust and respect in marriage, held at Life Cinema in Nakasi.

Professor Prasad noted that Fiji’s Audio-Visual and Film industry has significant potential for expansion and is becoming increasingly vital. He indicated that Fiji has emerged as a favored location for production, appreciated for its beautiful islands, marine life, culture, and heritage.

He mentioned that one of the Coalition Government’s primary goals is to bolster local talent through education and training initiatives. “The Government has been providing considerable support to our local Universities to cultivate local talents and enhance arts and skills development through various programs and courses,” he stated.

He described the new National Development Plan as “The People’s Plan,” reflecting the aspirations of the population and their desire for improved socio-economic conditions. Emphasizing the importance of fostering a supportive environment for filmmakers in Fiji, Professor Prasad expressed that this would help refine their talents and propel the industry forward.

“Films communicate a universal language that connects people across different cultures, nationalities, ages, and socioeconomic backgrounds,” he added. He articulated that as a significant part of contemporary art, films transcend barriers, highlighting shared values and emotions while serving as a powerful storytelling medium.

Professor Prasad extended his appreciation to the Director, Producer, and the entire cast and crew for their efforts, commitment, and hard work in bringing the vision of the film to fruition. He also pointed out that every film by Mr. Vimal Reddy showcases a genuine Fijian essence with strong social messages that resonate with the local audience and address societal barriers.
