Fiji is poised to enhance its economy by nurturing a vibrant audio-visual industry, an initiative that promises to benefit multiple sectors, including hospitality, transportation, and local service providers. This was emphasized by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Cooperatives, MSMEs, and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, during his address at the Film Fiji Industry Connect event in Suva.
Kamikamica showcased the significant contributions of Film Fiji to the nation’s economy, revealing that in the last financial year, Fiji hosted film projects, television shows, and documentaries from 11 different countries. These productions generated an astonishing new economic activity amounting to nearly $260 million, providing jobs for around 1,300 Fijians and engaging 282 local service providers, demonstrating the audio-visual industry’s expansive economic impact.
The Deputy Prime Minister also expressed aspirations for Fiji to attract more international productions, like “Love Island,” while simultaneously supporting the development of local filmmakers. The government acknowledges the audio-visual industry’s transformative potential and is dedicated to fostering an enabling environment for its growth. Collaborative efforts with the Immigration Department on automating work permits reflect this promise, as the government aims to create opportunities that allow local filmmakers to flourish and fully explore their creative capabilities.
By investing in the audio-visual sector, Fiji is taking a strategic step towards strengthening its economy and creating a robust platform for cultural expression. This commitment not only positions Fiji as an attractive destination for international productions but also enriches local talent and provides sustainable employment opportunities.
In summary, the initiatives laid out by the Fijian government highlight a hopeful future in which the audiovisual industry serves as a significant driver of economic growth and cultural development, benefiting many citizens and enhancing the nation’s global profile.
