Fiji is increasingly being recognized on a global scale as a leading tropical filming destination. Jone Robertson, the chief executive officer of Film Fiji, reported that the film industry contributed approximately $255 million to the Fijian economy in the 2023-2024 financial year, creating around 1,200 jobs mainly through international productions.
During the recent Suva International Film Festival at Damodar City, Robertson emphasized the progress made in supporting local filmmakers while attracting international projects. He remarked that the festival provides a critical platform for local filmmakers to showcase their work to the public, a previously challenging endeavor. “In the past, filmmakers struggled to find venues for their films, and the festival allows them to present their creations on the big screen,” he said.
Robertson pointed out that many filmmakers have relied on their personal finances to fund their projects and often encounter barriers in securing locations and permits. The growth of the film sector is not only generating jobs but also benefiting local service providers, as international productions create demand across various industries such as hospitality and logistics.
Fiji has successfully hosted high-profile productions like the reality TV series Survivor, which has filmed in the country for nine years, and Love Island, which took place in Pacific Harbour. According to Robertson, these impactful projects highlight Fiji’s emerging reputation in the global film industry.
Looking forward, Film Fiji aims to attract more investors to foster opportunities for local filmmakers and encourage the acquisition of equipment for use in both international and local productions. This initiative promises high-quality filmmaking that can be presented at international film festivals, further enhancing Fiji’s visibility in global markets.
The film industry in Fiji holds tremendous potential, not only for economic growth but also for fostering creativity and providing a platform for local talent to shine on a larger stage. By investing in the ability to produce high-quality films, Fiji may solidify its status as a premier filming destination for years to come.
