The Audio-Visual and Film industry has been identified as a priority in Fiji’s new National Development Plan. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Hon. Professor Biman Prasad, made this announcement during the premiere of the locally produced film “Langha Phobia,” which emphasizes the themes of trust and respect in marriage, held at Life Cinema in Nakasi.

Professor Prasad noted the significant growth potential within Fiji’s Audio-Visual and Film sector, recognizing it as an increasingly important industry. He highlighted that Fiji is emerging as a preferred location for film production globally, thanks to its beautiful islands, rich sea life, vibrant culture, and heritage.

The Coalition Government has made the development of local talent through education and training a key priority. Professor Prasad mentioned the government’s investment in local universities to foster talent, arts, and skills development through various programs and courses.

Describing the new National Development Plan as “The People’s Plan,” he stated that it reflects the aspirations of the Fijian people and their goals for improved socio-economic well-being. He emphasized the need to provide a supportive environment for Fijian filmmakers to hone their skills, which would nurture and boost the film industry.

“Films convey a universal language, connecting people from different cultures, nationalities, ages, and social standings,” Professor Prasad remarked. He added that movies play a vital role in contemporary art, breaking down barriers and highlighting shared values and emotions, making them potent storytelling mediums.

Professor Prasad also commended the Director, Producer, and the entire cast and crew for their hard work and dedication in bringing the film’s vision to life. He remarked that each movie by Mr. Vimal Reddy embodies an authentic Fijian essence and delivers strong social messages that resonate with local audiences and challenge societal barriers.
