Fiji’s Film Future: The Rise of Local Talent in the Audio-Visual Industry

The Audio-Visual and Film industry development has been a key focus in Fiji’s new National Development Plan. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Hon. Professor Biman Prasad, made this announcement during the premiere of the locally shot film “Langha Phobia,” which explores themes of “Trust and respect in a marriage,” at Life Cinema in Nakasi.

Professor Prasad noted that Fiji’s Audio-Visual and Film industry is poised for significant growth and is increasingly recognized as a vital sector. He highlighted that the country is becoming a top choice for film production, thanks to its stunning islands, vibrant marine life, rich culture, and heritage.

A major goal of the Coalition Government has been to nurture local talent through enhanced education and training programs. “The Government has been providing substantial support to our local universities to foster local talents, arts, and skills development through a variety of programs and courses,” stated Professor Prasad.

The new National Development Plan is referred to as ‘The People’s Plan,’ reflecting the aspirations of the community and their desire to improve socio-economic conditions.

Professor Prasad emphasized the need to create a supportive environment for Fijian filmmakers, allowing them to hone their skills, which in turn will promote and accelerate the growth of the film industry. He remarked, “Films articulate a universal language, connecting people across cultural, national, age, social, and economic boundaries. As a leading form of contemporary art, movies bridge gaps among individuals and highlight shared values and emotions, serving as a powerful medium for storytelling.”

The Minister commended the director, producer, and the entire cast and crew for their hard work and dedication in realizing this vision. He praised filmmaker Mr. Vimal Reddy’s work, noting that each of his films carries a distinct Fijian essence, accompanied by strong social messages that resonate with local audiences, contributing to breaking societal barriers.
