The Audio-Visual and Film industry is a top priority in Fiji’s new National Development Plan, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Hon. Professor Biman Prasad. He made this statement during the premiere of the locally produced film “Langha Phobia,” which focuses on themes of trust and respect in marriage, held at Life Cinema in Nakasi.
Professor Prasad emphasized the industry’s potential for growth, noting that Fiji is increasingly recognized as a desirable location for film production due to its beautiful islands, rich marine life, and vibrant culture and heritage. One of the government’s main goals has been to develop local talent through enhanced education and training.
“The Government has been providing significant support to local universities to foster talent, arts, and skills development through a variety of programs and courses,” he stated. He described the new National Development Plan as ‘The People’s Plan,’ aimed at addressing the aspirations and needs of the Fijian populace to improve their socio-economic conditions.
Highlighting the importance of nurturing filmmaking talent, Professor Prasad asserted that a supportive environment for local filmmakers would be crucial in promoting the growth of the film industry. He noted that films create a universal connection across diverse cultures, ages, and social backgrounds.
“Movies serve as a powerful medium for storytelling, breaking barriers while emphasizing shared values and emotions,” he remarked. He also praised the director, producer, and the entire cast and crew for their hard work and dedication in bringing the film to fruition.
Additionally, Professor Prasad acknowledged that Mr. Vimal Reddy’s films consistently carry an authentic Fijian essence, delivering impactful social messages that resonate deeply with local audiences and challenge societal norms.
