Fiji’s Film Frontier: A Call for Collaboration with India’s Cinematic Creators

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, has invited the Indian film industry to collaborate with Fijian writers and creatives to produce films—both commercial and documentary—focused on Fiji’s indenture history. This call comes with the assurance of government support for these initiatives.

During a recent statement, Professor Prasad expressed his enthusiasm for the proposals made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mauritius, which highlighted the importance of documenting the Girmit stories. Modi’s initiative includes creating platforms for ongoing research, supporting filmmakers, and nurturing talent in storytelling.

Professor Prasad remarked on the necessity to better understand the economics surrounding indenture, indicating that unlocking these economic aspects will lead to a richer comprehension of Girmit and its significant historical impact.

This initiative aligns with previous efforts discussed by Professor Prasad regarding the growth potential in Fiji’s audio-visual and film industry. He emphasized the goals outlined in Fiji’s new National Development Plan, referred to as “The People’s Plan,” which prioritizes the development of local talent and education within the creative arts. The government has committed to enhancing support for local universities and training programs to foster emerging filmmakers and writers.

This collaboration between Fiji and India could serve as a profound step towards cultural exchange and preserving important historical narratives while developing the local film industry. The focus on storytelling through film not only strengthens the creative sectors but also empowers communities by bringing their stories to a broader audience.
