The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Cooperatives, MSMEs and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, recently emphasized the potential of Fiji’s audio-visual industry to significantly enhance various sectors, including hospitality, transportation, and local service providers. Speaking at the Film Fiji Industry Connect event in Suva, he highlighted that the industry has already made impressive contributions to the Fijian economy.
In the last financial year, Fiji served as a backdrop for films, television shows, and documentaries from 11 different countries, generating between 255 to 260 million Fijian dollars in new economic activity. This influx of production work created approximately 1,300 jobs for locals and engaged 282 local service providers, showcasing the substantial economic impact of the audio-visual sector.
Kamikamica pointed out that Fiji is looking to attract more international film productions, akin to “Love Island,” while simultaneously nurturing local filmmakers. He reiterated the government’s recognition of the audio-visual industry’s transformative potential, expressing a commitment to create favorable conditions for its growth. This includes collaborations with the Immigration Department to streamline work permit processes as part of efforts to expand opportunities for local individuals in the industry.
