The Fiji Human Rights and Anti Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has reported receiving three recent cases of alleged police brutality, as announced by the Commission’s Chairman, Pravesh Sharma.
The first incident involves an individual from Nausori who claims to have suffered physical assault. The second case concerns another man who was reportedly detained in police custody in the Northern division for two weeks, during which he also faced physical assault. The third allegation pertains to the improper use of force during a caution interview, wherein it is claimed that coercion was used to obtain a confession.
Mr. Sharma emphasized the importance of conducting an urgent, impartial, and transparent investigation into these serious allegations of police misconduct, asserting that it is vital for accountability to be upheld. He stated, “Perpetrators must be held accountable. Accountability is crucial to restoring public confidence in the justice system and ensuring that such incidents do not recur.”
This situation highlights a pressing need for reforms within the policing system in Fiji. The FHRADC’s proactive stance on these allegations underscores their commitment to protecting human rights and promoting justice within the community. As investigations proceed, there is hope that outcomes will enhance trust in the police force and deter future incidents of brutality, ultimately leading to a more just society.
