Stroke remains one of the leading causes of death in Fiji, prompting health advocates to emphasize the importance of healthy eating and physical activity among the population. This crucial message is being promoted by Counterstroke Fiji, which is intensifying its awareness efforts in conjunction with World Stroke Day events taking place in Suva.

According to Elizabeth Reade Fong, the president of Counterstroke Fiji, the theme for this year’s activities centers on envisioning a Fiji free from disability caused by strokes. She noted that World Stroke Day, observed on October 29, serves as a key global opportunity to highlight stroke awareness. This year’s campaign specifically emphasizes stroke prevention, urging individuals to take proactive steps to mitigate their risk.

Fong outlined alarming statistics, revealing that stroke accounts for approximately 81 deaths per 100,000 individuals in Fiji and is ranked behind diabetes and ischaemic heart disease as a major health threat. With the Ministry of Health reporting that one in three Fijians is diagnosed with diabetes, she stressed the urgency of addressing these health issues. According to the World Health Organization, 38% of people aged 30 will not reach their 70th birthday due to non-communicable diseases, with diabetes and ischaemic heart disease significantly increasing the risk of stroke.

Fong urged Fijians to reflect on their diets, incorporate regular exercise, ensure adequate rest, and foster loving and supportive environments within their families and communities.

The World Stroke Day event will take place today at the Suva market, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., where the public is invited to benefit from free wellness checks, including blood pressure and blood sugar testing, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

In summary, the efforts by Counterstroke Fiji illustrate the growing recognition of preventive health measures in improving community well-being. By raising awareness and fostering proactive health behaviors, there is hope for a healthier future for all Fijians.
