Fiji’s health system is currently facing significant challenges in its battle against the increasing prevalence of HIV/AIDS, according to Renata Ram, UNAIDS Pacific Advisor. In a recent interview, she highlighted that while the country has made some progress, more robust measures are needed to effectively address the problem.
With 552 new HIV cases reported in the first half of 2024, Ram emphasized the importance of expanding the number of testing sites and treatment distribution points, as only three HIV clinics currently serve the nation, located in Lautoka, Suva, and Labasa. “Once a person contracts HIV, it becomes a chronic illness that requires lifelong management,” she noted, stressing the necessity for services to be more accessible and decentralized to communities.
Training healthcare workers to manage patients living with HIV is another crucial area for improvement. Ram pointed out that it’s not just about biomedical interventions but also about understanding the risk factors within communities and how local organizations can assist with prevention and health navigation. This holistic approach is vital for creating effective pathways for individuals to receive care and support.
