The National Conference organized by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) focused on emerging criminal trends in Fiji kicked off this morning at the Shangri-La Yanuca Island Resort. The event was inaugurated by Evan Robbins, the Program Director at the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs from the US State Department. Approximately 150 participants, including prosecutors, defense lawyers, private practitioners, police, and investigators, are attending this two-day gathering.
The conference features keynote speakers from both Fiji and abroad who will discuss the theme ‘Fiji on the Cusp of Emerging Trends: Narcotics, Age of Criminal Responsibility, International Cooperation, AI, Cyber Security, and Mental Health.’ Acting Director of Public Prosecutions, Ms. Nancy Tikoisuva, emphasized that while the theme may seem complex, it accurately reflects the current challenges Fiji faces in these areas.
Tikoisuva remarked that narcotics pose severe threats to the nation’s fabric, impacting families, communities, and institutions like schools and churches. She highlighted the vulnerability of children and noted that the evolution of criminal responsibility and the landscape of crime in Fiji are shifting, necessitating a deeper understanding of their implications.
In addition to drug-related issues, Ms. Tikoisuva addressed challenges such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and mental health that significantly affect the populace. She called for collaborative approaches, stressing the importance of international cooperation and partnerships with private sector actors, law enforcement, and civil society in combating these pressing issues.
This conference serves as a vital platform for law enforcement stakeholders to discuss emerging criminal concerns and learn from experienced keynote speakers in their respective fields.
Overall, the event symbolizes a proactive step toward understanding and addressing complex criminal trends in Fiji, fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing to create safer communities for all. The discussions and insights shared may pave the way for innovative solutions to safeguard the nation’s future against these evolving challenges.
