Fiji’s Fight Against Drugs: Tougher Laws Ahead!

The Counter Narcotics Bureau Bill is set to introduce stricter penalties to tackle the drug issue in Fiji, according to Assistant Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Ratu Rakuita Vakalalabure. During the opening of a workshop on the bill, Mr. Vakalalabure highlighted the necessity of robust legislation to support law enforcement in their fight against drugs.

“We will be implementing harsher penalties, likely to serve as a deterrent, due to the overwhelming drug presence in Fiji,” he stated. While details are still under consultation, he confirmed that tougher penalties are forthcoming.

Mr. Vakalalabure pointed out the importance of the consultation process and the support from international partners, which he believes will enhance the nation’s efforts against drug trafficking. He mentioned that the Coalition Government is eager to expedite this legislation.

“We are conducting all necessary consultations, which is vital as this issue impacts everyone,” he said. He noted that neighboring countries, Australia and New Zealand, are collaborating with the ministry and relevant stakeholders in the battle against drugs.

The government aims to have the bill passed during the parliamentary sessions in November or December, or by early next year at the latest.
