Fiji will have a prominent representation at the inaugural Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children, which will take place in Bogota, Colombia, this month. The country’s Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Lynda Tabuya, will lead the delegation, accompanied by Child Advisor Ms. Natalie Siegel-Brown and Ms. Arieta Tagivetaua, the Director of Children.

Minister Tabuya aims to spotlight the Fijian government’s dedication to minimizing violence against children during the conference. She is expected to discuss the implementation of care blogs in Fiji, drawing parallels to the Colombian model. Care blogs serve as community spaces for caregivers, allowing them a respite from daily challenges.

Tabuya highlighted Bogota’s unique approach, where care blogs offer vital support systems for its citizens. “With a population exceeding 4 million, these blogs provide safe havens for caregivers and vulnerable groups,” she noted.

She believes that a similar program in Fiji could significantly enhance the mental health of the working class and caregivers, particularly those tending to cancer patients. The initiative focuses on creating dedicated spaces for childcare, elder care, and support for individuals with disabilities. Tabuya envisions that such transformations can empower Fiji’s most vulnerable populations and provide them with opportunities for personal development and community engagement.

As this important conference unfolds, there is hope that these conversations will inspire effective strategies and foster a commitment to better support children and families in Fiji and globally.

In summary, Fiji is taking substantial steps toward protecting its children, highlighting a proactive approach to social welfare that could pave the way for improved community support and mental health resources.
