The government of Fiji has announced that it has no plans to establish a dedicated cancer treatment hospital. During a recent parliamentary session, Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu explained that most cancer treatment options are already integrated within existing major hospitals.
He highlighted that under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with Aspen and Healthcare Fiji Ltd, there are intentions for Lautoka and Ba Hospitals to develop a radiotherapy center. Dr. Lalabalavu noted that setting up such a center is a significant financial undertaking.
Currently, the ministry is working alongside Lautoka Hospital and the International Energy Agency to advance a project for a radiotherapy treatment center. Furthermore, a multisectoral team is reviewing the Radiation Health Act of 2009 to facilitate the introduction of radiotherapy services in the country.
Dr. Lalabalavu emphasized the importance of ensuring that local legislation aligns with international standards to successfully implement these healthcare services. The necessary updates to the legislation are in progress.
