Fiji’s Fight Against Arms Trafficking Heats Up: Recent Seizures Raise Alarm

Fiji Police have confirmed the seizure of bullets from a residence in Tavua last Friday, following tips received that led to the operation. Assistant Commissioner of Police – Crime, Mesake Waqa, indicated that a small quantity of Winchester bullets was seized from the house located in Matalevu.

This incident comes amidst heightened scrutiny on arms trafficking in Fiji, particularly concerning a recent investigation launched into the importation of a firearm and approximately 600 rounds of ammunition that were intercepted aboard the MV Malau, which had arrived from Tonga. That operation underscored escalating concerns regarding illegal arms linked to prominent individuals in the region.

Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has emphasized the importance of the ongoing investigations that involve cooperation with Tongan authorities to ensure proper documentation verification. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has publicly commended the collaborative efforts of various agencies, including the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service and the Fiji Navy, in maintaining the integrity of Fiji’s borders.

The recent proactive measures by law enforcement, including the recent seizure of bullets, are indicative of a robust commitment to enhancing national security. There is a growing hope that these ongoing efforts will not only address current security challenges but also foster a safer environment for all citizens of Fiji, highlighting the importance of community involvement in reporting suspicious activities and enhancing vigilance across the nation.
