The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) is currently undergoing a review that aims to address its operational challenges and the difficulties faced by law enforcement agencies. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed that this review is part of The People’s Alliance party manifesto. “It is being reviewed right now,” Mr. Rabuka stated, emphasizing that this initiative aligns with the party’s commitments.
The Prime Minister mentioned that the review process will examine FICAC’s mechanisms and the issues confronting various law enforcement bodies, particularly those involved in investigations. He also reassured the electorate that the 2013 Constitution would be reviewed in accordance with its stipulations. “That is part of the manifesto, and it’s a very straightforward motion,” he added, reiterating the party’s promise to voters, which will be fulfilled in compliance with constitutional guidelines.
Mr. Rabuka indicated that the government plans to seek expert legal advice to navigate the review of the 2013 Constitution lawfully. Additionally, he expressed the importance of engaging with the public to gather opinions on the constitutional review, either through a referendum or by encouraging submissions from citizens. “We still have the session later in the year when we can come back and do some parliamentary work on it,” he noted.
