The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) is undergoing a review focused on its operational functions and the challenges encountered by law enforcement agencies. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced that this review is part of The People’s Alliance party manifesto, stating, “It is being reviewed right now.”
Mr. Rabuka emphasized that the review is examining the mechanisms of FICAC and identifying issues faced by law enforcement, particularly within investigative units. He also reassured voters that the 2013 Constitution will be assessed in line with its requirements, highlighting, “That is part of the manifesto and it’s a very straightforward motion.”
He reminded party members of their promise to voters regarding this review, which will be conducted in accordance with the constitutional framework. Previously, Mr. Rabuka noted that the government would seek expert legal advice on the best approach to reviewing the 2013 Constitution within legal boundaries. He mentioned that the government plans to consult the public on the matter, potentially through a referendum or by encouraging submissions from citizens.
The Prime Minister indicated that there would be opportunities for parliamentary discussions later in the year regarding the constitutional review.
