Fiji’s FICAC Under Fire Amid Corruption Allegations Against Deputy PM

The Fiji Labour Party has urged the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) to take immediate action against Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad, accusing him of multiple instances of submitting false declarations to the Registrar of Political Parties.

In a statement, FLP Leader Mahendra Chaudhry noted that the Registrar of Political Parties had referred Prasad’s case to FICAC for violations of the Political Parties Act. Chaudhry expressed concerns that FICAC’s investigation into the matter was hindered by the unexpected and controversial appointment of Barbara Malimali as Commissioner, along with the forced resignation of Francis Puleiwai, the Acting Assistant Deputy Commissioner who had been overseeing the investigation.

Chaudhry indicated that Puleiwai had approved the charges and had formally notified that Prasad faced multiple counts for violating section 24(1)(b)(iv) of the Political Parties Act. He criticized the recent events at FICAC, suggesting they undermine the integrity of the rule of law and placed responsibility on Malimali’s leadership to move forward with the charges to maintain the Commission’s credibility.

He further asserted that justice must be served for Prasad, who he claims has long evaded accountability. Chaudhry also raised concerns regarding Malimali, who is reportedly under investigation by FICAC for misuse of office, suggesting she should temporarily step down to avoid any perception of interference in her own case.

Additionally, Chaudhry called on FICAC to expedite its investigations into six other Cabinet ministers who are under complaint, emphasizing public demand for justice, which he said has been amplified by widespread criticism on social media regarding the handling of the situation and the perceived reluctance of authorities to adhere to legal standards.

In response, Professor Biman Prasad stated that his legal team has formally rejected the allegations and advised that any inquiries regarding the matter be referred to his legal counsel.
