Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that he will soon submit a letter to the President for approval regarding the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry into the appointment of Barbara Malimali as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).
Rabuka previously indicated that determining the scope and specific mandate of such a Commission of Inquiry is within his authority. The appointment of Malimali, which took place on September 4, has sparked controversy as she is currently being investigated by the very agency she heads.
“We are just waiting for the President to respond; I will ensure he signs the approval,” Rabuka stated. “I have already recommended my letter, and it will be presented to him upon his return.”
A key topic of discussion includes the scope of the Commission of Inquiry, focusing on the issues surrounding the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption. This examination will cover several concerns, including Malimali’s appointment, allegations of ministerial interference, and the scapegoating of ministerial charges.
