Fiji’s Ferry Frustrations: What’s Being Done to Improve Your Travel Experience?

The Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development has responded to increasing concerns raised by passengers using service ferries and inter-island vessels.

Passengers have voiced their frustrations regarding overcrowding, delays, and inadequate services on these essential maritime routes.

Minister for Rural and Maritime Development Sakiasi Ditoka stated, “Our portfolio oversees the maritime region and the communities involved. We have engaged with the relevant line ministry and departments like MSEF to communicate the public’s concerns.”

He assured that the Ministry is dedicated to finding solutions that prioritize the safety, reliability, and comfort of all passengers. “I believe the voices we express at this forum are significant; we want everyone to benefit from development as we progress,” he added.

Permanent Secretary for Rural and Maritime Development Isoa Talemaibua emphasized the importance of public and private sector partnerships in addressing the existing challenges and enhancing transportation quality between Fiji’s main island groups.

“We are hopeful that current shipping providers will invest in this sector. The government has a responsibility to regulate, and we anticipate key support measures to enable these providers to deliver these essential services, as extensive capital investment is required,” he noted.

The Ministry is also collaborating closely with the Ministry of Transport to facilitate development in this area.
