Fiji’s Fashion Revolution: The Launch of a High-Tech Shirt Factory

Fiji’s first computerized shirt factory, Mark One Apparel, officially opened in Suva in November 1989. The facility, which cost $2 million to establish, was projected to produce 10,000 shirts per week and generate around $2 million in annual export revenue.

During the factory’s inauguration, then-Finance Minister Josevata Kamikamica highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting the garment industry to enhance employment opportunities and increase foreign income. He commended the new establishment for offering on-the-job training to approximately 100 workers.

Guests were given a tour of the factory located in the Bhindi Industrial sub-division of Vatuwaqa, Suva. Managing Director Mark Halabe shared insights about the factory’s advanced computerized design, pattern grading, and marking systems. He also mentioned the installation of two modern embroidery machines that would benefit garment manufacturers in Suva, stating that these innovations were expected to enhance the quality of exported garments and boost sales.
