Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his deep concern over the recent desecration at the Vunicuicui Shiv Mandir in Labasa, where pages of the Holy Ramayan were torn apart. He firmly labeled this act as “sheer disrespect” in a statement where he emphasized the importance of human rights, including freedom of expression and the right to worship.
The Prime Minister assured the public that the Coalition Government stands firmly against such acts of sacrilege and that a thorough investigation will be conducted regarding this incident. He highlighted that Fiji is home to many faiths, and emphasizes the necessity for mutual respect and protection of every place of worship. Rabuka reaffirmed that the Fiji Police Force is actively looking into the matter and that those responsible will face the law.
Deputy Prime Minister Biman Prasad also condemned the incident, which coincided with significant Hindu prayers marking the birth of Lord Rama. He described the act as unforgivable, stressing that offenses against sacred texts can disrupt the social harmony and moral fabric essential to Fiji’s diverse community. Prasad praised the temple’s devotees for their restraint in the face of provocation, encouraging them to pray for peace and wisdom.
This incident is not isolated; similar acts of vandalism targeting places of worship in Fiji have raised alarms among community leaders. They stress the urgent need for protective measures for these sacred spaces and are advocating for interfaith dialogue to promote understanding and respect.
Despite the distressing nature of this situation, community leaders see a hopeful opportunity for dialogue among different faiths, believing it can reinforce a collective commitment to mutual respect. Such discussions are essential for fostering understanding and tolerance, ultimately contributing to a more united society in Fiji, resilient against acts of intolerance.
With an active focus on safeguarding places of worship and fostering community engagement, there lies hope for healing and strengthening the communal bonds that unite Fiji’s diverse population.
