Fiji’s delegation attending COP29 is poised for success in negotiations due to the extensive expertise and experience of its members. Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad announced that the delegation will leave for Azerbaijan on November 11.
Professor Prasad emphasized the depth of experience within the team, stating, “Many of us have been part of numerous negotiations in the past, not only as politicians but also as academics.” He highlighted his own background in influential negotiations, including trade agreements and those related to the World Trade Organization (WTO). He revealed that the permanent secretary for Finance, who has successfully negotiated hundreds of millions of dollars in recent years, will also be part of the team.
With COP29 focusing heavily on finance, Prasad reassured critics who may view him as inexperienced in these discussions. “I’m not new to COP negotiations, COP processes, and national negotiations,” he stated. “We are well prepared, and when we board the plane, we will be fully ready for what lies ahead.”
He noted that he plans to meet with the delegating members next week and will provide further details in a press conference on November 4. Prasad clarified that the total of 55 or 56 individuals in the delegation includes not just government representatives but also members from the private sector, whose travel expenses are covered by their organizations while the government provides official accreditation.
Additionally, it was mentioned that some Fijian citizens might acquire accreditation from other Pacific nations, such as Tonga or Tuvalu, for participation in the conference. Prasad acknowledged that some critics may misinterpret this information but assured that the delegation is well-equipped for the task ahead.
The Fiji delegation’s strong preparations for COP29 highlight a committed effort to address critical climate financing discussions, hopefully leading to meaningful progress at the conference. Their readiness and professionalism bode well for engaging effectively on the global stage.
This positive anticipation underscores Fiji’s ongoing commitment to addressing climate issues and enhancing international collaboration.
