Kalaveti Ravu, the former Minister for Fisheries and Forests, was absent from the Magistrates Court in Suva today, where his corruption case was scheduled to be heard. His attorney, Jioji Cakau, stated that Ravu was attending Parliamentary duties in Nadi. However, state counsel Lavenia Ravuikadavu raised concerns that they had not been informed about his absence in advance.
Alongside Ravu, Tekata Toaisi, the former Fisheries and Forests Regional Manager North, appeared in court. Both individuals face allegations stemming from their involvement in a Ministry of Forestry investigation into the illegal trade of banned species of beche-de-mer that occurred between July 25 and August 31, 2023. Ravu is accused of interfering with the lawful investigation, while Toaisi allegedly assisted him in the alleged abuse of office.
The case is set to be revisited on January 21.
This unfolding legal matter highlights the ongoing efforts to address corruption and uphold lawful conduct in government positions. As the case progresses, it serves as a reminder of accountability in public service, fostering hope for transparent governance.
