The Minister for Elections in Fiji, Siromi Turaga, has underlined the importance of the electoral system’s integrity for the nation’s democratic health during the launch of the electoral reform review. He stressed that the ambitious terms of the review are vital in bolstering the democratic processes, stating, “Elections are not just about casting votes; they are about ensuring that every Fijian’s voice is heard and that the will of the people is reflected in just, transparent, and accessible processes.”
This comprehensive review will evaluate key legislation, including the Electoral Act 2014, the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding & Disclosures) Act 2013, and the Electoral (Registration of Voters) Act 2012. Turaga emphasized that the endeavor goes beyond legal reform; it serves as an opportunity to modernize the electoral framework to meet both national and international standards.
A central aspect of this review aims to enhance participation and transparency within Fiji’s electoral laws. It will address crucial issues, such as women’s representation, civil society involvement, media freedoms, the independence of electoral institutions, and the inclusion of persons with disabilities. To ensure a well-rounded approach, the review will involve extensive consultations with a diverse array of stakeholders, including government bodies, political parties, media representatives, and electoral experts, to gather insights on the current electoral challenges.
The anticipated outcome will include a comprehensive report and draft bills that will be presented to the Attorney-General and the Minister for Elections. This reform initiative showcases a positive trajectory toward strengthening democracy in Fiji, fostering a more inclusive and participatory electoral system that empowers citizens and enhances public trust in the democratic process.
By actively engaging in these reforms, the Fijian government is demonstrating its dedication to addressing past criticisms while ensuring that every citizen’s voice is respected in shaping the future political landscape. This proactive approach reinforces hope for a more transparent and equitable democratic environment in Fiji.
