Electoral Commission chair Barbara Malimali has urged the public to remain patient while the Commission addresses an appeal from Opposition MP Alvick Maharaj, who is contesting the deregistration of FijiFirst. Malimali explained in a media statement that the hearing is currently in progress, and the Commission is mandated to release its findings following the conclusion of the proceedings.
“The Electoral Commission is committed to ensuring fairness for both sides, and while I understand that the public wants updates, we will provide them,” she stated. She assured that a press release will be issued along with the formal publication of the findings once the hearing concludes.
Malimali acknowledged that patience is required, saying, “We prefer to take our time rather than make mistakes.” She indicated that the process includes mentions and hearings where both parties present their submissions.
“We have conducted preliminary hearings, and while it will take additional time, we are not looking to expedite the process hastily; we must reach the right decision,” she added.
She emphasized that while no organization can guarantee 100 percent accuracy in decision-making, the Commission strives to make reasoned choices by thoroughly considering the perspectives of both parties involved. “Honourable Maharaj and the Registrar of Political Parties each have their concerns that we are required to address. So, while some may be frustrated by the time it takes, we believe it is better to proceed carefully than to risk errors along the way.”
