Fiji’s Electoral Commission Hears High-Stakes Appeal: What’s Next?

The Electoral Commission of Fiji (ECF) convened today in a quasi-judicial role to review the appeal made by Opposition MP Alvick Maharaj regarding the Registrar of Political Parties’ decision to deregister the Fiji First Party, effective July 1, 2024.

ECF Chair Barbara Malimali announced that the hearing process has begun and the commission anticipates publishing its decision at the end of the proceedings. She emphasized that, until that time, the commission is unable to provide further comments.

“We trust the public of Fiji will understand this need for discretion and will be patient,” Malimali stated.
