Fiji’s Education Dilemma: Can Vocational Training Bridge the Gap?

Fiji faces a significant challenge in its education system, with only about 30 percent of students who exit the schooling sector advancing to tertiary education. Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF) chairman Steve Chand shared these statistics during a meeting in Suva with a delegation from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He emphasized the urgent need to re-engage the estimated 70 percent of students who do not pursue further education, particularly through vocational training programs.

Chand highlighted that providing a safety net for these students is a top priority. One effective strategy mentioned is the expansion of vocational training through dedicated centers. The discussions also revolved around addressing skills gaps and training needs, crucial elements in enhancing Fiji’s education framework.

Additionally, Chand introduced the concept of “education tourism,” noting its growing importance in the context of changing international student mobility patterns. He explained that as countries like Australia and New Zealand consider capping international student intakes, Fiji aims to position itself as an attractive alternative for students who may otherwise study in those countries. With the University of the South Pacific serving as a regional hub, Fiji seeks to capture a greater number of students from across the Pacific Islands and beyond.

The meeting also explored potential partnerships and investment opportunities to further strengthen the education sector and improve HECF’s accreditation processes.
