Fiji’s Education Dilemma: Can Vocational Training Bridge the Gap?

Spread the love

In Fiji, only around 30 percent of the approximately 15,000 students who exit the schooling system proceed to tertiary education, as highlighted by Steve Chand, chairman of the Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF). During a recent meeting in Suva with a delegation from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Chand expressed the need to reintegrate the remaining 70 percent of students, predominantly through vocational training initiatives.

Chand underscored the importance of providing a “safety net” for these students, emphasizing that large-scale training through vocational centers is a crucial strategy. The meeting delved into discussions about the skills gaps and training requirements within Fiji’s educational landscape, with HECF Chief Executive Officer Dr. Rohit Kishore joining Chand in presenting the steps being taken to enhance the education sector.

Additionally, Chand introduced the concept of “education tourism,” noting the emerging trend as countries like New Zealand and Australia increasingly consider capping international student intakes. He anticipates that students who may no longer be able to study in these countries will look towards Fiji as an alternative. Fiji is establishing itself as a regional educational hub with the University of the South Pacific (USP), which serves students from 14 Forum Island countries.

The meeting also explored potential collaborations and investment opportunities between Fiji and the UAE, as well as enhancements to HECF’s accreditation system.

This situation presents a hopeful outlook for Fiji’s education sector, as it not only addresses the challenges faced by a significant number of students but also embraces the opportunity to attract international students seeking quality education in the region. By developing vocational programs and positioning itself as an education tourism hub, Fiji can foster a more robust educational environment that benefits its youth and the nation as a whole.
