Fiji’s Education Crisis: Exam Pass Rates Under Scrutiny

The fluctuating pass rates of the Fiji Year Eight Examination since 2016 can be attributed to several critical factors, including overcrowded classrooms, an outdated curriculum, and inadequate monitoring of student performance, as outlined by Education Minister Aseri Radrodro in a recent parliamentary discussion.

Minister Radrodro highlighted that the existing curriculum doesn’t align effectively with the needs and interests of students or the local context. He acknowledged the Prime Minister’s call for a thorough review of the Ministry of Education’s curriculum. Furthermore, the high student-to-teacher ratio in overcrowded classrooms poses a challenge, diminishing the possibility for teachers to provide individual attention and support essential for student success.

Other issues identified include poor school management, lack of strategic planning, and insufficient monitoring of academic performance. There is also concern regarding students’ weak foundational skills in key subjects such as mathematics and literacy, which hinders their preparedness for Year 8.
