All landfill sites across Fiji have reached their full capacity, prompting the Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, to inform Parliament that innovative solutions, such as waste-to-energy facilities, are being explored.
During his address, Mr. Nalumisa emphasized the urgent need to tackle environmental and cultural issues arising from current waste management practices, particularly highlighting the concerns surrounding the dump site near Sigatoka Town, which poses serious risks to both the environment and cultural heritage of the region.
Opposition members Faiyaz Koya and Rinesh Sharma supported these sentiments, underscoring that effective management of the site requires a long-term commitment. Mr. Nalumisa recalled a visit to the site approximately 21 months ago, during which he noted its poor condition and the prevalent dumping of waste in the area.
He mentioned ongoing discussions with the site management and newly-appointed administrators on effective containment and management strategies for the site. Mr. Nalumisa pointed out that a system for improved management is currently in place, with a focus on preserving the site, which is recognized as a UNESCO Heritage site.
The minister acknowledged the unpleasant odors coming from the dump, which create challenges for local residents and tourists. He stressed the importance of effective odor management by the local council and administrators.
Furthermore, Mr. Nalumisa indicated that the ministry has been receiving presentations from various agencies and companies showcasing successful and sustainable waste management solutions from around the world. The ministry is reviewing these options to establish a sustainable waste management strategy that will benefit future generations.
