Over the past five years, Fiji has experienced considerable changes in illicit drug cases, highlighting the evolving challenges associated with drug-related activities and law enforcement, according to Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci.
During his address at the ODPP Annual Conference in Sigatoka, ACP Raikaci emphasized the serious risks these developments pose to public health, community safety, and the overall social fabric of the nation. He noted that the COVID-19 pandemic had exacerbated the situation, disrupting law enforcement efforts and creating economic vulnerabilities that intensified illicit drug activities.
Despite these challenges, Raikaci pointed out that this period has yielded valuable data regarding drug trends, impacts in various divisions, types of offenses, and the demographics of offenders. This information provides essential insights into how to better tackle these issues in the future.
Raikaci shared statistics indicating a baseline of 1,275 drug cases in 2019. Following this, in 2020, cases surged to 1,501, marking an 18% increase, likely due to heightened enforcement efforts and greater drug availability. However, in 2021, the number of cases plummeted to 1,032, a 31% decrease, which can be attributed to COVID-19 restrictions that hindered criminal operations. The year 2022 saw a rebound with 1,236 cases, a 19% increase as restrictions were lifted, and normal operations resumed. Yet, 2023 has set a new record with 1,615 cases, reflecting a worrying 31% rise.
This alarming trend underscores the increasing complexity of combatting the illicit drug crisis in Fiji.
While the data presents a challenging landscape, it also offers hope. The insights gained can lead to more effective strategies and enhanced collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. By focusing on prevention and support measures, Fiji can work towards dismantling the evolving challenges of drug-related activities, reinforcing public safety and health in the process.
In summary, Fiji’s drug situation has seen substantial fluctuations in illicit drug cases over the past five years, revealing critical trends and challenges that can guide future efforts in law enforcement and community safety.
