The Fiji Police Force has reported a total of 6,659 drug-related cases over the past five years, with the highest incidence of 1,615 cases documented last year. Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci presented these figures during the opening of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Annual Conference in Sigatoka.
Raikaci noted that a 31% decline in drug cases in 2021 was primarily due to COVID-19 restrictions, but emphasized that this drop does not indicate a reduction in drug engagement within the community. The Fiji Police Force continues its proactive measures including community outreach and operations that have led to multiple arrests and prosecutions, particularly during the festive season.
He mentioned the ongoing efforts to engage with various sectors by visiting schools, churches, and community meetings as part of their awareness initiatives. Raikaci expressed the government’s strong commitment to combating drug abuse, which includes the establishment of a new Narcotics Bureau.
Additionally, he encouraged legal professionals to consider the government’s anti-drug initiatives in contrast to the rights of individuals accused of drug-related offenses as they navigate their responsibilities in court.
The DPP Conference is scheduled to conclude today, marking a significant forum for discussing these important issues.
This alarming statistic highlights the ongoing challenge of drug-related issues in Fiji, but the active measures being taken by the police and government demonstrate a commitment to addressing the problem. As law enforcement continues to focus on prevention and education, communities may see a gradual improvement in drug-related situations.
