Fiji’s Drug Crisis: Can Traditional Titles Hold the Key?

iTaukei Affairs Minister Ifereimi Vasu has noted that the ongoing vacancies in traditional roles and titles are worsening the drug abuse crisis in Fiji, particularly within indigenous communities. He emphasized the ministry’s commitment to addressing this issue by filling these vacant positions.

Vasu explained that the interconnectedness of the iTaukei, natural resources, and culture creates a robust framework that has been compromised, allowing drug abuse to infiltrate these communities. He expressed concern over the significant impact drugs have had not only in urban areas but also within iTaukei communities.

The minister acknowledged that there has been criticism toward the vanua for perceived inaction against the drug problem, asserting that a comprehensive strategy is necessary. He mentioned that the ministry has been proactive by collaborating with the Veitarogivanua-Native and Fisheries Commission, which has started visiting villages to address these vacancies.

Traditionally, the commission intervened only in cases of title disputes, but this new approach has been welcomed by the communities. Vasu highlighted that five provinces have already benefitted from this initiative.

He stressed the importance of filling these traditional titles as a vital step in combating drug issues and indicated that training for traditional leaders will follow to further empower them in their roles. This initiative signals a hands-on commitment from the ministry to tackle the challenge of drug abuse in the region.
