The Fiji Police Force has reported a total of 6,659 drug-related cases over the past five years, with a peak of 1,615 cases recorded last year alone. Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci presented these figures during the opening of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Annual Conference in Sigatoka.
Raikaci noted that the reported 31% decline in drug cases in 2021 was largely attributed to COVID-19 restrictions; however, he emphasized that this decline does not necessarily indicate a reduction in drug activity within communities. The Fiji Police Force remains committed to combating drug-related offenses through various initiatives, including community outreach and ongoing law enforcement operations, particularly during the festive season.
“Our approach involves engaging with schools, churches, communities, and provincial meetings,” Raikaci stated, highlighting the continued rise in arrests during their festive operations. Furthermore, he acknowledged the government’s dedication to addressing the drug issue, which includes the formation of a new Narcotics Bureau.
Additionally, Raikaci encouraged lawyers to weigh the government’s anti-drug initiatives against the rights of individuals facing drug charges, urging a balanced approach in their legal duties.
The DPP Conference, which focuses on these significant issues, is set to conclude today.
This situation underscores the evolving landscape of drug-related issues in Fiji, highlighting both law enforcement’s proactive measures and the complexities that legal professionals must navigate in drug offenses. There is hope that with continued awareness and preventive initiatives, communities can see a future where drug-related cases decrease significantly, fostering safer environments for all residents.
